This weekend… A quiet Friday morning // with this song on repeat // finally making it over to the Oude Kerk (see photo) for the World Press Photo 2012 Exhibition (until 17 June) // biking home on the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk and popping into the recently opened store without a home. (Haarlemmerstraat 26), the wonderful concept store Restored (Haarlemmerdijk 39) and the only and only Two For Joy Coffee Roasters (Haarlemmerdijk 182; see previous post) to try their new Iced Chai Latte // finally making it to the EYE Film Institute (see views here and here) on the northern banks of the IJ river to see the Wes Anderson’s latest film, Moonrise Kingdom (watch the trailer or read the review) on Friday evening // a perfect brunch at G&T’s really, really nice place (Goudsbloemstraat 91) with a dear friend on Saturday morning // before heading to the LIKESTATIONERY Pop-Up store on the Prinsenstraat 24 (LIKESTATIONERY is the online store of design-studio Strawberryblonde) and the Noordermarkt, where I bought these beauties // a quiet Saturday evening // a visit to de Appel Arts Centre (Prins Hendrikkade 142) at their new location for the new exhibition Topsy Turvy, Long live the upside-down world! (read more about the installation featured above) // warming up with hot chocolate at Brood Bar (Kloveniersburgwal 18) // before meeting an old friend from high school at Cafe van Zuylen (Torensteeg 4-8; love this corner) // and ending the day with this movie. This weekend… A stop by Brouwerij ‘t IJ on Friday afternoon // followed by a picnic in the Oosterpark until late in the evening (previous Oosterpark picnic) // breakfast on the roof on Saturday morning // lunch with my parents before a preview of the newly renovated building of the Stedelijk Museum, designed by Mels Crouwel of Benthem Crouwel (the museum will finally open its doors on Sunday 23 September!) // more afternoon rooftop hangouts // another picnic in Vondelpark for the last of the day’s sun // before heading to Melkweg (Lijnbaansgracht 234) to see Beach House, the dreamy pop duo of French-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally, perform their latest album, Bloom (an incredible show!) // a lazy Sunday morning/afternoon spent, again, on the roof // headed home on Sunday afternoon for a dinner with my grandparents // making the most of the long-weekend by visiting The New York Times Magazine Photographs exhibition at Foam (Keizersgracht 609) in its last days (watch this video of director of the magazine and curator of the exhibition, Kathy Ryan) // a walk down the Utrechtsestraat before stopping by Frozz (Utrechtsestraat 27; see previous post) and sitting along the Keizersgracht watching the boats (and swans!) go by…
This weekend… The weekend van de rollende keukens or ‘Kitchens on Wheels’ in the Westerpark was quite a hit, I sampled a delicious BBQ sausage, arugula and garlic sauce sandwich, and couldn’t get enough of all the different food carts and decorations (see more photographs here) // an evening at De Brakke Grond (Nes 43) for Amsterdam 2.0, an art initiative that explores the vivid art scene in Amsterdam // Saturday afternoon in the library followed by a quiet evening at home // a slow Sunday morning followed by the first summer sunshine // late-afternoon sun with a glass of wine, a platter of cheese and crackers, and friends and family.
This weekend… A great evening of doodles, freehand drawing, live music and drinks at De Brakke Grond (Nes 43) for 1000 Drawings Amsterdam on Friday (here’s the drawing I took home) // a coffee and slice of carrot cake at Kofi-T (Ferdinand Bolstraat 149) across from Inkt en Olie (Ferdinand Bolstraat 151; they sell the best postcards!) with my mom on Saturday morning // popping into Cotton Cake (1e van der Helststraat 76), Charlie + Mary (Gerard Doustraat 84) and Zublim (Gerard Doustraat 86) // sampling delicious macarons at the recently opened Poptasi Pastry // grabbing a sandwich at Foodware (1e van der Helststraat 63) and eating it on a bench in the Saphartipark // heading over to the Jewish Historical Museum (Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1) for the latest exhibition ‘Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz‘ (until 24 June) // a Subbacultcha! show at De Nieuwe Anita (Frederik Hendrikstraat 111) on Saturday night // a coffee on the roof on Sunday morning // a day spent at the University with classmates on Sunday // biking home on the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk and stopping for ice cream at Jordino (Haarlemmerdijk 25) with friends.
This weekend… A Friday evening reunion (the Danes!) // celebrations for my 23rd birthday on Saturday started with a birthday breakfast // a bike ride into town on a rainy afternoon for a little shopping at lunch at Singel 404 // a walk through the Jordaan // a Saturday afternoon nap before a birthday dinner complete with drinks and cake // heading out to Hannekes Boom on Saturday evening for drinks and a little dancing // a late start on Sunday morning // heading out to the opening weekend of Roest in Amsterdam-Oost on Sunday afternoon // soaking up sunshine and tunes // dinner on the rooftop on a sunny Sunday evening // preparing for another night out, Queen’s Night // sitting along the Keizersgracht Sunday night watching the boats go by, sipping glasses of wine // waking up early Monday morning for Queen’s Day! // breakfast on the roof // a sunny warm Queen’s Day meant walking around the city all day // sitting along the canals and watching the boats go by // outdoor dance parties // ending the weekend on the rooftop, once again. This weekend… Friday night drinks with friends at Bar Struik (Rozengracht 160) // Saturday morning pancakes // an early afternoon stroll on the Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat, popping into the Tea Bar (Haarlemmerdijk 71), Restored (Haarlemmerdijk 39) and Jordino (Haarlemmerdijk 25) // purchasing these beautiful bright pink ranunculus on my way home // a St. Patrick’s Day get-together on Saturday evening // lunch at the NeighbourFood Market (see previous post) in the Westergasfabriek of the Westerpark on Sunday // heading out east to the Food Film Festival at Studio/K (Timorplein 62) // followed by the book launch of Yvette van Boven‘s latest cookbook, Home Made Winter (her previous cookbook, Home Made, can be purchased in English) at the Java Bookshop (Javastraat 145) with Teun van de Keuken (a Dutch broadcast journalist, passionate about chocolate, who asked an Amsterdam court to convict him of eating chocolate from cocoa farms benefitting from child slavery in the Ivory Coast, back in 2007). This weekend… Friday afternoon was spent at the Cobra Museum (Sandbergplein 1, Amstelveen), devouring delicious sandwiches at Le Fournil de Sebastian (Olympiaplein 119), a caffeine-kick at Friday Next (Overtoom 13) and marveling the new exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum (Paulus Potterstraat 7) ‘Dreams of Nature‘ // coffee and sandwiches with a new friend at De Stadskantine (Van Woustraat 120) on Saturday morning // biking home past the Noordermarkt and spotting mounds of oranges and these beautiful tulips // Saturday evening spent with friends at the lovely (and tiny!) Cafe Belgique (Gravenstraat 2) // heading home on Sunday and hanging out with family for dinner and devouring this raspberry trifle. Happy Monday!
