city trip: london day 2 (january ’11)

After an awfully rude awakening on our second morning (a fire alarm went off at 9.30am because a pipe burst and water was everywhere – this lasted till about 1.30 in the afternoon!), a Sunday morning nevertheless, we explored East London – Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market. We had originally planned to go to the Columbia Flower market, only open on Sundays from 8am to 2pm, and visit stores like Treacle (cupcakes, to compare them to the Hummingbird Bakery cupcakes we had the day before) located at 110-112 Columbia Road and Vintage Heaven, located at 82 Columbia Road. Next time…

It was already late and getting dark, but it was nice to get a feel for the very different kinds of markets you can find in London… Compare Brick Lane to Notting Hill, for example! We did walk by the famous Brick Lane Beigel Bake, at 159 Brick Lane, definitely a must try for next time.

We headed through Shoreditch to Spitalfields Market for lunch, well, late lunch at this point. Wow wow wow, favorite new restaurant, Leon in London. Their belief is that “food should taste good and do you good,” and trust me, it really is delicious. My sister and I both had the Grilled Chicken wraps with a garlic sauce and salad and pickles. I really can’t wait to try sweet potato falafel next time! You can buy the Leon cookbooks from Amazon, by clicking here and here. And visit the website for more information. The Leon restaurant in Spitalfields can be found at 3 Crispin Lane, open daily.

We then walked from there back to the Mild End campus of Queen Mary University of London (my sisters’ school), past the new Royal London Hospital at Whitechapel (see photographs here) and past the Sainsbury’s to buy groceries for dinner. Our night ended up being ballet-filled, watching the old classic Center Stage and the new psychological thriller, Black Swan. A perfect end to Day 2, after a busy Day 1 and now on to Day 3…
