It’s New Years Eve weekend! How will you be celebrating NYE? I’ll be celebrating with friends at my apartment – a long slow dinner accompanied with lots of wine, beer and champagne, and watching the fireworks from my roof (see photograph above and more here). I’m sure the view will be quite different than the one above, but lovely as ever with all the lights. I hope. In Amsterdam this week (I imagine it will be a quiet one!)…
- New Years Eve… The largest countdown will be held at Museumplein, with a host of activities starting at 9pm. Other places to ring in the new year include Nieuwmarkt, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. Click here for a whole host of parties and other NYE ideas.
- Enjoy Dutch New Years treats including ‘olliebollen’ (round doughnuts dipped in powdered sugar) or ‘appelflappen’ (apple fritters). You’ll find them all over the city, including at IJScuypje (see previous post, or currently known as ‘Stamppotje’) on 31 December.
- Why not recover New Years Day with a walk along the Prinsengracht or the Brouwersgracht, two of my favorite areas in the city.
- Still looking to ice skate? Check out the Leidseplein (hosting olliebollen and poffertjes stalls, Gluhwein and bradwurst, a Christmas market and an ice rink), the Rembrandtplein ‘Winterland’ (complete with a larger ice rink, a Christmas market and several food and drink stalls, including a Gluhwein cafe) or the Museumplein’s Ice*Amsterdam (the biggest ice rink of them all).
- Happy New Year!
