recent in 5 (#19) the jordaan, omelettes & photography

My mom came up to Amsterdam on Friday…

This wasn’t the first time we walked the streets of Amsterdam. Previous visits included exploring the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk, lunch at Singel 404, going to The Movies, lunch at Bazar the next day and browsing old books at the Stedelijk Museum. Another time, we walked down the Utrechtsestraat and visited the Jewish Historical Museum and Museum Willet-Holthuysen. This time…
– We started at Raw Materials, a beautiful furniture/leather/goods store on the Rozengracht 231;
– Walked through the Jordaan (1), stopping at a few of these jems along the way;
– Down the Berenstraat, passed Boekie Woekie (Berenstraat 16) to Mendo (Berenstraat 11), the designer bookstore (2);
– A French-inspired lunch (omelettes et frites!) at the wonderful Cafe George (Leidsegracht 84);
– Just around the corner was  Huis Marseille (Keizersgracht 401) for the exhibitions ‘Siebe Swart: Land of Air and Water‘ and ‘Naoya Hatakeyama: Natural Stories.’ The Siebe Swart exhibition was really beautiful, I definitely recommend for anyone interested in the geography of the Netherlands and the Dutch and their relationship with water (you can see  a few photographs through the window, in the 4th photograph, just barely!)
– A caffeine kick at Two For Joy Coffee Roasters (Frederiksplein 21) (4);
– Before heading to Museum Van Loon (Keizersgracht 672), the Amsterdam canal house owned by the regent family Van Loon, dating back to the 17th century (in 1602 Willem van Loon co-founded the Dutch East-India Company!)
