coming up #26 (amsterdam)

Did you know that swans form monogamous pair bonds that last for many years, and often these bonds last for life? I spotted these two love birds swimming down the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal, around the corner from the  University of Amsterdam. Coming up in Amsterdam this week…

  • Tonight, Wednesday 29 Feb, the 15th edition of Ignite Amsterdam will take place at the Mediamatic Bank (Vijzelstraat 68). Twelve 5-minute presentations ranging from design and new technologies that deal with nature’s intricate structures and workings, to game art and cat movies, to window agriculture and the first 3-dimensional model of a brain circuit. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are 7 euros.
  • Also tonight, the Baltimore trio Future Islands will be performing at OT301 (Overtoom 301). The show starts at 9pm and costs 8 euros.
  • Last chance to visit the exhibition, ‘Saul Leiter: New York Reflections‘ at the Jewish Historical Museum (Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1). This exhibition is definitely worth a visit, I’ve been back several times already! Until Sunday 4 March.
  • Tickets for the Food Film Festival, to be held at Studio/K (Timorplein 62) from 16-18 March, have been on sale since Monday. There may still be tickets available to one of the many films, events (breakfast and a movie, anyone?) or workshops (like Arab Spring). There will also be a daily market and other free events!
  • New at Huis Marseille (Keizersgracht 401; see previous post) this week, the exhibition ‘Guy Tillim: Second Nature.’ In this exhibition, “the images of the South African photographer display an analytical precision that never fails to stir up the emotions.” On Saturday 3 March at 2pm, the photographer will give a guided tour of the exhibition. Email info@huismarseille.nl to sign up.
  • This weekend, there will be, once again, a HUGE flea market in the IJ-Hallen, up North (see my post on Amsterdam-Noord). The market is open on Sat 3 and Sun 4 March from 9.00am to 4pm and costs only 4 euros.
  • Spotted! A great deal from Strawberry Earth: a trip for 2 to the photography museum Foam (Keizersgracht 609; see previous post) and a tasty organic lunch for two in the Foam Cafe for just 26 euros. Only 4 days remaining to purchase the deal, which is valid for 3 months from 1 March to 27 May. Strawberry Earth is a blog for “creative people who care about the planet” with a “focus is on sustainable design, fashion and film.” In addition to organizing Strawberry Earth Events, they also feature products and services from sustainable brands that live up to the Strawberry Earth Principles. Subscribe online to receive weekly updates!
  • On Sunday, head to the Westerpark for the monthly Sunday Market (see previous post). From 12.00 to 6pm on Sunday 4 March, find the best goodies (sweets, homemade crafts, etc.)
  • And also on Sunday, the Otherground Market at OT301 (Overtoom 301). At this underground market, you’ll find everything from records to street art, jewelry and toys and second hand books and clothing. From 2pm.
